SOCIAL IMPACT PROJECTS
Every project has an impact on the society whether it’s improving livelihoods, promoting education, eradicating hunger, promoting economic growth or delivering social change.
In 2019, Africa Kids Book Club through its founder initiated social impact projects with an aim of supporting schools and communities in the remote rural areas to access books and other learning materials.
In partnership with East African Educational Publishers (EAEPL) and Newspaper in Education (NIE) we started a reading club at Suguta Consolata Primary School in Samburu County. This project also caters for the children living in the community.
In 2020 with the support of our book club parents and well wishers we were able to renovate and restock an old community library at Archers post in Samburu county. This project is hosted by Archer’s Post Catholic Parish. The project helps the children more specifically teenagers access ICT resources and reading materials.
In 2022 we partnered with Power Him a local community organisation in Nanyuki which empowers the boy child through the Dress A Boy Initiative to restore the confidence and dignity of the boys by donating school uniforms.
In 2022 and 2023 respectively we supported children who were sitting their national examination in grade 6 and class 8 with stationery, food and sanitary towels for the girls. Despite donating these materials we noted that the main need for these children at both schools is provision of a feeding program.
Social, cultural and environmental factors affect the education sector in rural areas of Laikipia County making it difficult for most children to access school daily. Distances between schools and homes are far and many pupils are forced to walk through difficult terrain to access education. The severe drought witnessed in 2022 and 2023 in Laikipia affected kids’ academic performance as pupils were hungry due to lack of enough food .
Therefore this year , we will embark on a new social impact project where we hope to provide a feeding program ( porridge and lunch) for children at Gakeu Primary School. The challenge we need to overcome first is building a permanent kitchen for the school as they are currently using a semi-permanent structure and a three stone stove.
We welcome well wishers and donors to support this project that will positively impact the lives of these children.
“At the end of the day it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished, it’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back.” ― Denzel Washington
