Writing Mentorship – Social Impact Project- 2025
Following our founder’s visit to the Kamburaini junior school last year, where she donated storybooks in partnership with Australia Books for African children, we identified a need to support the children’s writing skills.

While the books provided valuable reading materials, it became clear that students needed more practice in expressing their thoughts through writing.
We introduced a writing mentorship program, to assist the children in grade 7, 8 and 9 with their writing skills. We then assigned them an essay topic: “The Importance of Conserving the Environment.” This topic was chosen to encourage both critical thinking and awareness of environmental issues.
The students voluntarily wrote the essays and fared well. Upon reviewing them, we observed that they faced the following challenges;
- Organising their thoughts in writing
- Lack of flow
- Creativity in expressing their points
- Grammar
Our visit to the school started with a writing workshop where we addressed their challenges. We also motivated and encouraged them by awarding all who had volunteered to write the essays. Special awards were also given to the best-written essays from each grade. This approach not only recognized outstanding efforts but also inspired all students to improve their writing skills.
Through this mentorship, we gained valuable insights into the students’ needs and moving forward, we aim to:
- Organize more structured writing sessions.
- Provide guidance on essay writing techniques.
- Continue recognizing and rewarding improvement in writing.
By combining reading and writing activities, we hope to strengthen literacy skills for these school children.This project was a meaningful step in empowering students, and we look forward to expanding its impact to more schools in the coming months and years.

Great course Monica!
