Staple Dishes in Southern Africa

Southern Africa is full of tasty and exciting foods. These foods are not only yummy, but they also tell us a lot about the culture and traditions of each place. Maize porridge is the most popular food in Southern Africa, it has many names like pap, sadza, nshima, and nsima. Here are some of the dishes from different Southern African countries.

Angola

  1. Funje – A sticky porridge made from cassava flour, eaten with spicy stews.
  2. Moamba de Galinha – Chicken stew cooked with palm oil, garlic, and okra.
  3. Calulu – A mix of dried fish, vegetables, and spices cooked in oil.

Zambia

  1. Nshima – A thick maize porridge, similar to sadza, eaten with fish, beans or vegetables.
  2. Ifisashi – Vegetables and peanuts mixed together in a yummy sauce.
  3. Chikanda – Also called “African polony,” it’s made from wild orchids, peanuts, and chili.

Malawi

  1. Nsima – Another thick maize porridge, eaten with beans or meat.
  2. Chambo – A tasty fish usually fried or grilled.
  3. Kondowole – Sticky cassava porridge – it’s thick and stretchy, eaten with sauce or fish.

Mozambique

  1. Xima – Maize porridge like sadza, eaten with sauce, fish, or meat.
  2. Matapa – Cassava leaves cooked with coconut milk, garlic, and peanuts.
  3. Piri Piri Chicken – Spicy grilled chicken with chili sauce.

Zimbabwe

  1. Sadza – A thick maize porridge, eaten with vegetables, meat, or peanut butter stew.
  2. Muriwo Une Dovi – Leafy green vegetables cooked with peanut butter.
  3. Maputi – Popped maize (like popcorn) but without butter.

Eswatini (formerly Swaziland)

  1. Sidvudvu – A pumpkin and maize porridge.
  2. Umncweba – Dried meat (like beef jerky), eaten as a snack or with a meal.
  3. Emasi – Fermented sour milk, thick like yogurt .People drink it or eat it with pap.

South Africa

  1. Pap – A soft porridge made from maize (corn) flour. It’s eaten with meat or vegetables.
  2. Boerewors – A long, tasty sausage made with beef and spices. It’s often grilled on a barbecue.
  3. Bunny Chow – A hollowed-out bread loaf filled with spicy curry. 

Lesotho

  1. Papa – It’s a thick maize porridge eaten with stew.
  2. Motoho – A sour porridge made from sorghum. It’s usually a little tangy but very healthy.
  3. Likahare tsa Nama – Meat stew made with beef, sheep, or goat, cooked with vegetables.

Botswana

  1. Seswaa – A soft, shredded meat dish made from beef, salt, and water. It’s served with thick maize porridge.
  2. Bogobe – A smooth porridge made from sorghum or maize.
  3. Vetkoek – A deep-fried dough bread, often stuffed with meat or jam.

Namibia

  1. Mahangu Porridge – A thick porridge made from a grain called pearl millet. It’s eaten with stew.
  2. Kapana – Grilled beef strips served hot with chili and spices.
  3. Oshifima – A kind of porridge made from maize or millet, eaten with meat or vegetables.
