Northern Africa is not just desert and sand, it also has amazing mountains.

The mountains are full of natural beauty with  amazing wildlife,snow, volcanoes and ancient secrets. Each one is special in its own way.

Here are some mountains in the Northern Africa Region.

Egypt 

  1. Mount Sinai
  • A holy mountain with biblical reference to where Moses got the Ten Commandments.
  • Mount Sinai is located on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, a land bridge between Africa and Asia.
  1. Mount Catherine
  • Is Egypt’s tallest mountain
  • It sometimes gets snowy at the top.

Libya

  1. Bikku Bitti
  • It is the highest mountain in Libya.
  • Found far in the desert, near the border with Chad.
  1. Tibesti Mountains (shared with Chad)
  • These are old volcanic mountains.
  • They have big craters and lava rocks from past eruptions.
  • The area has cave paintings and tools from people who lived there long ago.

Tunisia

  1. Jebel ech Chambi
  • The highest mountain in Tunisia, in the west of the country.
  • Located in a national park with wild animals and birds.
  1. Tunisian Dorsal
  • Is a mountain range in the middle of Tunisia.
  • It was used in ancient times as paths for travelers.

Algeria

  1. Djebel Chélia
  • It is  the highest mountain in Algeria.
  • Found in a forested area called the Aurès Mountains.
  1. Tell Atlas Mountains
  • Found close to the Mediterranean Sea.
  • These mountains help farmers grow fruits, grains, and olives.
  1. Saharan Atlas Mountains
  • These are found closer to the Sahara Desert.
  • The land is rocky and dry, with hidden valleys and canyons.

Morocco

  1. Mount Toubkal
  • Toubkal is the tallest mountain in North Africa.
  • It has snow at the top during winter season from the month of December to February.
  • It is popular with hikers .
  1. Middle Atlas Mountains
  • These mountains have lots of trees and lakes.
  • It rains more here, so it’s cooler and greener than most of Morocco.
  • It is home to wild monkeys called Barbary macaques.
  1.  Anti-Atlas Mountains
  • These are old, rocky mountains in southern Morocco.
  •  Scientists find fossils here from animals that lived millions of years ago.

Sudan

  1. Deriba Caldera (part of the Marrah Mountains)
  • A volcano crater inside the Marrah Mountains
  • It has a small lake inside and green plants all around.
  1. Marrah Mountains
  • These are green mountains in the middle of dry western Sudan.
  •  It rains more here than in the rest of Sudan.

Mauritania

  1. Kediet ej Jill
  • Tallest mountain in Mauritania
  •  A mountain full of iron. It’s so strong it affects the use of compasses.
  1. Tagant Plateau
  • A wide, rocky area with cliffs and flat-topped hills.
  • Has ancient rock paintings made by early people thousands of years ago.
