West Africa may be known for its savannas and coastlines, but it also has some breathtaking mountains that are rich in history, culture, and biodiversity. From rocky peaks and misty forests to sacred legends and rare animals, these mountains tell fascinating stories about the land and its people. Here are some of the region’s mountains:
Nigeria
- Chappal Waddi
- Also called “Gangirwal,” meaning “Mountain of Death” not because it’s scary, but because of its remote, mysterious nature.
- It’s the highest point in Nigeria, located in Taraba State, near the border with Cameroon.
- The mountain is part of the Bamenda-Adamawa-Mandara mountain chain and it is very special in the stories of the Mambilla people who believe the mountain is the “home base” of ancient magical groups.
- Mount Dimlang
- It is also known as Vogel Peak.
- Mount Dimlang is located in the Bamboutos Mountains, part of the Cameroon highlands.
- It is a stratovolcano, meaning it was formed by layers of volcanic rock and ash.
Ghana
- Mount Afadja
- It is also known as Mount Afadjato, is the highest mountain in Ghana, standing at 885 meters.
- The name “Afadjato” comes from the Ewe word “Avadzeto,” meaning “at war with the bush,” referring to the dense vegetation found in the mountain.
- The mountain is located near the Tagbo Falls and Wli Falls, the highest waterfall in West Africa.
- Mount Adaklu
- Mount Adaklu, located in Ghana’s Volta Region and is a flat-topped mountain.
- At the top of the mountain, there is a sign that shows it was once used by German mapmakers a long time ago to help measure land in the Trans-Volta Togoland area.
- The mountain is a popular spot for hiking, with a three-hour trek to the summit, where colorful birds and historical artifacts can be seen.
Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire)
- Mont Tonkoui
- Its name, “Tonkoui,” translates to “Great Mountain” in the Yacouba language.
- It’s the highest mountain in the Man region and the second-highest in Ivory Coast.
- It’s located in the western part of Ivory Coast, near the border with Liberia.
Senegal
Most of Senegal is flat, but there are some higher areas, like small plateaus and old mountain edges found in the southeast and east.The highest point in Senegal is an unnamed feature on the Baunez ridge near Népen Diakha on the border with Guinea.
- Fouta-Djallon Highlands
- The Fouta Djallon Highlands are known as the “Water Tower of West Africa” due to their role as the source of several major rivers like Senegal, Gambia, and Niger.
- The highlands are home to the Fula (or Fulani) people, known for their rich cultural traditions and agriculture.
- Long ago, the Fouta Djallon area was known for Islamic religious wars (called jihads). Later, it came under French colonial control and was made a peaceful area.
- Mamelles Hills
- The Mamelles Hills are also known as Les Mamelles or Deux Mamelles. They are twin hills of volcanic origin in Dakar.
- The name “Mamelles” comes from the French word for “breasts,” referencing the hills’ shape.
- The hills are located near Cap Vert, the westernmost point of Africa.
Mali
- Mount Hombori Tondo
- Mount Hombori Tondo, the highest peak in Mali reaching a height of 1,155 meters.
- The mountain has tall red rocks made of sandstone. These rocks stand straight up and look like the famous Dolomites mountains in Italy.
- Caves on and around the mountain show that people lived there more than 2,000 years ago. This makes the place very important for studying history and archaeology.
- Manding Mountains
- The Manding Mountains are named after the Mandinka people and the Manden region is their traditional homeland.
- The Manding Mountains are primarily composed of sandstone, which has been shaped into distinctive buttes and cliffs by erosion.
- The mountains stretch from the border with Guinea to an area west of Bamako.
Burkina Faso
- Mount Tenakourou
- Mount Tenakourou, the highest point in Burkina Faso and it is a hill standing at 747 meters.
- It sits right on the border between Burkina Faso and Mali.
- The name “Tenakourou” comes from the local Dyula language, meaning “the hill of Tena,” named after the village at its base.
- The Sindou Peaks
- The Sindou Peaks are the second-highest point in Burkina Faso.
- The peaks are located about 50km west of Banfora, a major town in the region.
- The peaks are tall, pointy shapes made from sandstone, a soft kind of rock. Over millions of years, wind and rain slowly wore the rock away, shaping them into sharp, needle-like peaks. They rise about 415 meters (or 1,362 feet) above the sea.
Niger
- Mont Bagzane
- Mont Bagzane, also known as Mont Idoukal-n-Taghès, is the highest mountain in Niger.
- Mont Bagzane is part of the larger Aïr Mountains range, a prominent feature in the Sahara Desert.
- The village and pilgrimage site of Abatol is located at the base of the peak.
- Aïr Mountains
- The Aïr Mountains in Niger are a volcanic mountain range rising from the Sahara Desert.
- The mountains have been a crucial part of the historical salt trade routes, with caravans traveling from the Aïr foothills to the Bilma oasis.
- The mountains also contain valuable mineral resources, including uranium.
Guinea
- Mount Loura
- Mount Loura is the northernmost and highest peak in the Fouta Djallon highlands, reaching 1,573 meters.
- The mountain features a natural rock formation resembling a woman’s head, known as the “Dame de Mali” or “Lady of Mali”.
- Mount Loura is also the source of several major rivers, including the Gambia, Bafing (Senegal), Koliba, Kolenté (Great Scarcies), Kaba (Little Scarcies), and Konkouré.

- Mount Richard-Molard, the highest peak in both Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire, is part of the Nimba range.

Liberia

- Mount Wuteve, also known as Mount Wologizi among the Loma people, who are indigenous to the region.
- It is the highest point in Liberia, reaching an elevation of 1,440 meters.
- It is located in the Guinea Highlands range, within Lofa County.
Sierra Leone

- They are known for being the highest mountain range in the country.
- The Loma Mountains have been a non-hunting forest reserve since 1952.
- The mountains are located in the northeastern part of Sierra Leone, extending about 32 km north-south, west of the source of the Niger River.
- Mount Bintumani
- The tallest mountain in Sierra Leone and also known as Loma Mansa.
- It’s the highest peak within the Loma Mountains range.
- It is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
Togo
- Togo Mountains
- Mount Agou is the highest point in Togo, located within the Togo Mountains.
- The Koutammakou region, part of the Togo Mountains, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing its unique cultural and historical significance.
- The Koutammakou region was used as a refuge during the Slave Coast era.
- Mount Agou

- Mount Agou is a monadnock, meaning it stands alone as a prominent, isolated peak, separate from the larger Danyi plateau.

- It is a hill situated on the border between Benin and Togo 58 kilometers (36 miles) from the town of Bassila.
- It’s a part of the Atakora Mountains, which extend westward into Togo.
The Gambia
- Mamayungebi Hill
- It’s also known as Mamayungebi Hill and Mamayungehi Hill.
- Mamayungebi Hill is situated in the Central River Division of The Gambia.
- It’s categorized as a hill (T – Hypsographic). This means it’s recognized for its height above the surrounding land, but it’s not high enough to be considered a mountain.
Cape Verde
- Pico do Fogo
- Pico do Fogo, meaning “Fire Peak” in Portuguese.
- It’s the highest peak in Cape Verde, reaching nearly 2,830 meters.
- It is an active volcano, the most recent major eruption occurred in November 2014.
Guinea-Bissau
- Boé Mountains
- The Boé Mountains, also known as the Boé Massif.
- They are situated in the Bafatá Region of Guinea-Bissau, forming part of the Guinea Highlands.
- The Boé Mountains were very important in helping Guinea-Bissau become an independent country. During the war for freedom, fighters from a group called PAIGC used the mountains as a safe place to stay and plan their actions.
Mauritania
- Kediet ej Jill
- Kediet ej Jill, the highest peak in Mauritania.
- It is located in the Tiris Zemmour region of Mauritania.
- Mount Kediet ej Jill is mostly made of a special rock called magnetite, which has a lot of iron in it.
