Cities in Kenya are known for their diverse culture, bustling markets, and vibrant atmosphere. The country’s major cities include Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu,Nakuru and Eldoret. These cities are named as such due to their large populations, economic importance, and urban development.

Nairobi City
  • Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya.
  • Nairobi was  granted city status in 1954 during British colonial rule. 
  • Nairobi is the only city in the world with a National Park within a capital city, The Nairobi National Park. 
  • The United Nations headquarters in Africa is in Nairobi City. 
  • Jomo Kenyatta Airport,located in Nairobi is the largest and busiest airport in East and Central Africa.

Mombasa City
  • Mombasa is a coastal city in Kenya and  is the country’s second-largest and oldest city.
  • Mombasa was granted city status in 1959 during British colonial rule .
  • Mombasa has the largest sea port in Kenya.
  • The Port of Mombasa is  the largest port in Kenya and an important link for imports and exports for countries without seaports like Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Mombasa’s  Moi International Airport , is the second busiest airport in Kenya.
  • The city has popular tourist attractions such as Fort Jesus, beautiful sandy beaches, and vibrant markets attracting visitors from around the world.

Kisumu City
  • Kisumu is a port city located on the shores of the largest lake in Africa Lake Victoria.
  • Kisumu was named a city in 2001 by H.E Daniel Arap Moi, the second president of the Republic of Kenya.
  •  Kisumu is the third-largest city in Kenya.
  • The city is renowned for its vibrant fish market, stunning sunsets over the lake.

Nakuru City
  • Nakuru is located in the Great Rift Valley and home to Lake Nakuru. 
  • Nakuru municipality was conferred the city status on 1 December 2021 by H.E Uhuru Kenyatta the fourth president of Republic of Kenya making it the fourth – largest city in Kenya.
  • Lake Nakuru  National Park is famous for its flamingos, rhinos and has the largest bird sanctuary in East Africa.
  • Menengai Crater is an inactive volcano that attracts tourists from all over the world.

Eldoret City

  • Eldoret is Located  south of Cherangani hills in the Great Rift Valley.
  • On 15 August 2024, Eldoret was conferred city status by President William Samoei Ruto , making it the fifth city of Kenya.
  • Eldoret is  home to the famous long distance world champion athletes such as Mary Keitany, Vivian Cheruiyot, Kipchoge Keino, Eliud Kiochoge to name a few.
  • Eldoret is also home to the  third largest airport in Kenya, located in Uasin Gishu County, south of Eldoret city.
