Wildlife Found in Northern Africa

Northern Africa is known for its big deserts.Many animals here are used to living in very dry and hot places. Even though the Northern Africa region doesn’t have thick grasslands like the savannah, it is still home to animals that are strong and can survive in tough conditions. Some of these animals are very rare.

Let’s explore each country in Northern Africa and discover the wild animals that live there.

Egypt 

The wild animals found in  Egypt’s deserts and savannas include ;

  • African lion
  • Cheetah
  • Leopard
  • Nile crocodile
  • Nubian ibex
  • Egyptian mongoose
  • Desert foxes
  • Hawks
  • Gazelles
  • Hyenas
  • Wild camels

Examples of some endangered animals in Egypt include the Egyptian vulture and the Kleinmann’s tortoise.

Morocco 

Morocco has many different kinds of wild animals that include;

  • Barbary macaque (a type of monkey), 
  • Fennec fox (a tiny fox with big ears), 
  • Barbary ground squirrels
  • Wild boars.

Morocco’s endangered animals include Barbary macaque, Barbary leopard,Northern Bald Ibis, Mediterranean monk seal and the Addax.

Algeria 

In the Sahara Desert of Algeria, you can find animals like;

  • Fennec fox (a small fox with big ears),
  • Slender-horned gazelle, 
  • Addax (a white antelope).
  • Jerboas 

Other animals found in Algeria include 

  • Wild boars  
  • Jackals  
  • A few leopards and cheetahs.

Some endangered animals are the monk seal (a rare sea animal) and the Barbary macaque (a wild monkey).

Tunisia 

Tunisia’s wildlife includes animals like wild boar, Jackals,Gazelles ,Fennec fox, Atlas Deer, Barbary Sheep(a wild sheep) and various bird species like the Common kestrel, Red-throated loon and Common linnet.

The key examples of the endangered animals found in Tunisia  include the Egyptian Vulture, Audouin’s Gull, and Angel Sharks.

Libya 

Libya has many different animals that live in the desert, near the coast, and in other parts of the country. 

You can find desert animals like the Fennec fox,The sand cat, Golden wolves, and tiny animals like Gerbils and Shrews. There are also reptiles like Snakes, Adders, Kraits and Lizards.Birds like the Desert larks, Desert sparrows, and migratory birds like the white stork and various raptors are present.

Endangered bird species found in Libya are the Cyrenaic Partridge, the Lesser Sandplover, Northern Bald Ibis and Libyan Blue Tit.

Mauritania 

Common wildlife found in Mauritania include the Addax, Fennec foxes, and reptiles like the Desert monitor lizard

The Atlantic coast is home to Atlantic Humpbacked dolphins,Whales, Seals,West African manatees  and diverse birdlife like the African Spoonbills, Fulvous Whistling-ducks, White-faced Whistling-ducks,Common Shelducks and migratory species like Flamingos, Pelicans, and Terns.

Sudan 

Sudan is the only country in Northern Africa where you can still find most of the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, Elephant, and Buffalo) especially in the southern regions close to South Sudan.

Other notable animals found in Sudan include Nubian giraffes,aardvark, aardwolf, and various antelope species like the tiang, waterbuck, and reedbuck.

Birds like the Secretary bird ( is the national bird of Sudan), Bustards, Guinea fowl, and Storks are also found here.

Sudan is home to several endangered animals, including the African wild dog, Black Rhinoceros, and African Elephant.
