WORLD BEE DAY

Today, May 20th we celebrate World Bee Day.

Do you know why bees are very important for humans to survive?

Bees are important because they help make the food that we eat.

How is that, you may ask?

Well, bees are the greatest pollinators

A pollinator helps to carry pollen from flowering plants. Now, most of our food comes from flowering plants such as fruits, vegetables and nuts. Other pollinators include butterflies, bats and hummingbirds.

Pollen is a powder from flowering plants that makes the plant form seeds.

We celebrate this day to raise awareness of the importance of bees as pollinators and also to protect them because they contribute to our food security.

Food security means that everyone in the world has enough nutritious food to eat to grow strong and healthy.

The theme for this year’s world Bee day is “Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all”

This means that we need to have the desire to save pollinators such as bees so that we can get food that will help us grow healthy.

Here are some of the ways to protect and save bees?

  1. Learn more about bees. Read books and watch documentaries or movies about bees. The Bee movie is a good start to learn about bees.
  1. Plant different types of plants because bees depend on nectar and pollen from flowers as their food.
  1. Farmers should be encouraged to have bee hives in their farms to provide a safe home for bees.
  1. We should avoid the use of pesticides and herbicides in the garden or farms especially when the bees are active during the flowering season.
  1. Spread the word on how to save bees to other children and to the people in your community.

Bees are also important because they give us food such as honey, royal jelly and pollen. They also provide us with beeswax, propolis and honey bee venom.

As you enjoy your honey, remember the importance of bees to human survival.
