What are the Tropics?

  • The Tropics are the warm parts of the world found near the middle of the Earth, between two special lines called the Tropic of Cancer (above the equator) and the Tropic of Capricorn (below the equator).
  • Right in the middle of these two lines is the Equator, an invisible line that circles the Earth. The tropics cover the area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

What Makes the Tropics Special?

  1. It’s Always Warm

The sun shines almost directly over the tropics, so it stays hot or warm most of the year. There are usually only two seasons: a rainy season and a dry season.

  1.  Lots of Plants and Animals

The tropics have rainforests, jungles, and coral reefs where many kinds of animals and plants live, some that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.

  1. Plenty of Rain

Many tropical places get lots of rain, which helps plants grow. But too much rain can also cause flooding.

  1.  Many Different People and Cultures

People from the tropics speak different languages, eat different foods, and celebrate many fun traditions. It’s a very colorful and exciting part of the world.

The tropics are important because:

  1. They help keep the Earth’s weather balanced.
  2. They grow a lot of food that we eat, like bananas, cocoa, and pineapples.
  3. They are home to beautiful animals and plants that we need to protect.

We celebrate the International Day of the Tropics on June 29 every year. The day reminds us how special the tropics are and how we all need to protect them.
